From mom and pop shops to global corporations, family-run businesses are the backbone of many economies around the world. But keeping it in the family can make it challenging for younger generations to carve out their own niche in the shadow of their parents. In this week's episode of Three and a Half Degrees, we connected Stephanie McMahon, Chief Brand Officer at WWE, with Gary Vaynerchuk, Head of VaynerMedia to share how they jumpstarted their careers while working for their parents.
Stephanie McMahon reports to her father, Vince McMahon, and works closely with her husband (professionally known as wrestler Triple H), her brother and even her cousins. Gary Vaynerchuk started out at his father’s liquor store as a teen, and decided to leave the family business years later to pursue a full-service digital agency. While one remained working in the family business and the other left to start his own company, both executives connected over how they shaped their career paths by focusing on their strengths and passions, which ultimately helped strengthen their businesses.
McMahon initially worked her way up at WWE, but was given a huge opportunity early in her career to run a division. That excitement dimmed, however, when her father, her boss, told her she wasn’t meeting expectations. Her dream of succeeding in the WWE business was in jeopardy until she started working with a coach outside the family business to help her identify and focus on her strengths. Learning to leverage her strengths moved McMahon into her leadership role, and keeps WWE as one of the top entertainment brands in the world.
In many ways, Vaynerchuk grew his career by focusing on his strengths, too. He worked at his father’s liquor store from the time he was a teenager, but knowing that he wanted to do more than bag ice and stock shelves, he used the experience to explore his other passions, such as experimenting with wine collecting, introducing ecommerce and marketing with online video. While he ultimately became a co-CEO and grew the company from a small local shop to an online destination, Vaynerchuk recognized he wanted to help grow other businesses as well—something he wouldn’t have discovered without his job at his dad’s store.
